Helping customers understand the risk posed by second-hand tanks

The detailed guidance covers four main reasons why OFTEC does NOT recommend installing a second-hand tank over a new bunded tank.

OFTEC has initiated a campaign aimed at both consumers and technicians to raise awareness of the risks posed by second-hand tanks.

With the reuse of second-hand tanks increasing, it is important that householders understand the potential risks. From unknown tank condition and loss of warranty protection to possible transport damage and compliance issues, a used tank may be a false economy, exposing homeowners to significant future expenses.

OFTEC’s technical team is receiving an increasing number of queries around the sale, installation and notification of second-hand storage tanks. In response, the trade organisation has written a blog to help technicians explain the implications to customers.

The detailed guidance covers four main reasons why OFTEC does NOT recommend installing a second-hand tank over a new bunded tank, including:

  • Verification of condition
  • Manufacturer’s warranty considerations
  • The potential for damage in transit
  • Environmental risk

The article concludes that a new bunded tank of either steel or plastic construction is best practice with the installation carried out by an OFTEC technician to ensure it’s completed to the highest standards.

“Do it once, do it right.” is the overarching message.

OFTEC has sent information to technicians, and the wider campaign will include social media posts aimed at consumers and information for training providers.
