Many oil heating technicians valued the opportunity to speak face to face with OFTEC.

OFTEC attended the BEPEX trade event in Limerick, welcoming both registered and non-registered technicians to the stand. BEPEX is a key industry event for plumbing, heating and electrical professionals across Ireland.
The show was well attended, with many oil heating technicians valuing the opportunity to speak face to face with OFTEC.
As the Republic of Ireland does not currently operate a Competent Persons Scheme, it was useful to hear directly from technicians about barriers to registration and perceived benefits. Many noted that local authorities require CD11 documentation for public sector servicing, while landlord certificates are often requested for rented properties. This is encouraging and presents an opportunity for OFTEC to work with other local authorities to help raise installation standards.
Some concerns were raised around the cost of training, public liability insurance and essential equipment, such as analysers and test tools. These were highlighted as barriers to registration, particularly for newly qualified technicians. OFTEC will review these issues and consider how best to address them.
Feedback on OFTEC training and the field guide was very positive, with many describing it as ‘an indispensable on-site resource’. Support from the local inspector, Sean McBride, and the Ipswich office was also praised.
Several OFTEC-registered companies, including Grant, Firebird, KANE, METAC and Warmflow, were also present.
Despite rising oil prices following the Iran conflict, there was clear optimism around the future of liquid fuels. Boiler manufacturers reported seeing an increase in orders, perhaps unexpectedly, but noted that higher fuel costs are prompting upgrades to modern condensing boilers. According to Sutherland Tables, these can reduce annual heating costs by up to 28%!
Following the success of the Limerick event, BEPEX will return in Dublin later this year, taking place on Wednesday 9 September (4:00pm–9:00pm) and Thursday 10 September (9:30am–4:00pm), offering another opportunity for industry professionals to attend. OFTEC will be there, and we welcome you to come and visit the stand.
